Story Behind The Song

How To Become A Whosoever

bulletThe Story Behind The Song...
"A Whosoever Is What I Am" ... The story begins an entire year earlier, as Barb and I wanted to develop a new Theme for our ministry.  Taken from the scripture verse found in St. John 3:16 that says:   "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.", that Theme would become: "I AM A WHOSOEVER".   For you see, according to John 3:16, that is what we become when we ask Jesus Christ, God's only son, to come into our hearts and lives, by faith, and to accept Him (Jesus) as our personal Savior...and to forgive us of our sins and thus "not perish, but have everlasting life".  We then become a ... "whosoever"!! That line then began to appear on our web-site, our business cards, all our promotional materials and even be incorporated as a part of our ministry logo. As a result, a ministry T-Shirt and Cap was designed by  Jim & Mary Pruett, owners of Quick Signs of Pauls Valley, OK who attended our home church, First Baptist in Pauls Valley, OK at the time.

Now I've said all of that to let you see just how important that Theme was becoming to Barb and I and our ministry.  So from about November 2001 till November 2002 that line and theme was shared at all our concerts and services across the country..."I Am A Whosoever"! However, as attempts were made a various times over that year to write a song, knowing in my heart that the Lord had a song there, went in vain.

We had cris-crossed America, sang on the GospelFest Cruise Celebration to the Caribbean, with that Theme shared and displayed wherever we went, but no song.  Barb and I stopped by ,for a day or two at the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, KY on our way to Maine and met a fellow who had written a song entitled...you guessed it, "I Am A Whosoever" ... we have not heard his song, and still haven't had the opportunity.  Knowing well that there are times songs will have a same title, yet the lyrics and tune are different...and is ok, I  knew the Lord had a song for us and our ministry.

It's getting into the fall of the year and before we left out for our west coast tour, as Barb and I had been getting songs together for a new recording, we set the recording date for the first part of January 2003 in Greer, SC with our good friend, Jesse Evatte at ... guess the name of the recording studio... STUDIO 3:16   We had all our songs picked and was leaving a spot for the song I know the Lord had for us, but hadn't come yet ... "I Am A Whosoever".

Over the past year Barb and I had talked about, quoted, tried writing the song, yet nothing seemed to develop.  I said, "seemed to develop", for now from hind-sight I can see how the Lord "was developing the song" a bit at a time, from state to state, city to city, church to church, concert to concert ... for with all the talking and sharing on what that verse ment to us over the year, the song became a reflection of the words we had been saying all along.  As a matter of fact, the second verse, that Barb recites in the song, are some of the very same words we spoke at concert after concert, not realizing that the Lord was already "writing the song".

So, finally one afternoon, setting in a RV Park in Las Vegas, Nevada ...having shared our ministry at several churches there, and after having been in California and beginning to work our way back toward Oklahoma in time for Thanksgiving at home, the Lord put the pieces together.  In my spirit, I sensed the Lord telling me to, "Simply turn the words around", and so I did, scratching out "I Am A Whosoever", and writing above the words ... "A Whosoever Is What I Am" and within the next 10 minutes the song was down on paper... tune included!

Ten minutes to write, but developed, and in the process of writing, for over a year, and probably the life-time that Barb and I have had in Christ!  Those wonderful words of John 3:16.  Yep?  It's simple, yet direct.... for you see a "whosoever" IS what I am, and you are, or, can be!
